ESSential™ and ESSential™ Xtra Aspheric Multifocal lenses are the number one dispensed aspheric multifocal lenses in North America. ESSential™ lenses are available in two distinct series of aspheric designs for the emerging, midlife, and mature presbyope. *Available with Reclaim multifocal optics.

The ESSential GP Multifocal family is a series of lenses that includes the ESSential GP multifocal and ESSential Xtra, with the option of adding a front-surface annular component called a concentric S-form add (CSA) enhancement to either design. The ESSential GP Multifocal can be a translating or simultaneous back-aspheric lens with low eccentricity to help prevent corneal molding. The lenses incorporate “S-Form Technology,” a proprietary manufacturing process, to produce a smooth flattening effect, that creates a greater posterior power gradient and a greater near point power effect. S-Form provides better contrast sensitivity than other aspheric lens designs that incorporate many curves cut into the lens to create the aspheric affect. The ESSential Series combines the best attributes of simultaneous and translating multifocal designs.

The ESSential family simplifies the process of fitting multifocals and meets the needs of a variety of patients. New presbyopic patients enjoy good vision at distance and near with exceptional comfort and can easily transition from contact lenses to spectacles. Emmetropes and near emmetropes, as well as astigmatic patients are often perceived as difficult to fit, but studies have shown that these patients perform well with ESSential lenses and achieve good vision at distance, intermediate and near. The uniformity of the aspheric design gives you the ability to transition your patients from one series to the next with consistency as their near needs advance or change.

ESSential Multifocal GP lenses utilize an alignment fitting philosophy that ensures long-term corneal integrity and stable vision. Standard base curves range from 6.90 to 8.30 and diameters from 8.8 to 10.5.

Fitting Philosophy

The unique “S-Form” aspheric posterior curve creates, from center to periphery, a multifocal effect. This will provide an ADD correction from +0.75 to +3.00D depending on the series utilized. A Concentric S-Form Add (CSA) can be added to the anterior surface of the lens with 3 various distance zones and up to a combined ADD correction of +4.00D when more ADD power is needed without compromising intermediate or distance.

In primary gaze, the central portion of the lens provides distance correction. When reading, convergence and a slight upward transition of the lens favors utilization of convex powers toward the periphery of the lens. An upper lid attachment optimizes this transition of the lens from distance optics (center), to optics needed for comfortable intermediate and near vision (periphery).

The family of ESSential Multifocals is available in three Series (I, II and III). Series I should be used for early to intermediate presbyopes to incorporate up to a +1.25D aspheric power gradiant for near and intermediate vision. Series I features the least amount of eccentricity and the largest portion of the optic zone provides distance vision. The add zone of the Series II begins closer to the center of the lens creating more add power as the result of increased eccentricity. Series II power gradiant generates +150 to 2.00D for near and intermediate vision. Series III has the greatest eccentricity and the add zone begins the closest to the center of the lens. It has the smallest amount area for distance within the optic zone. Series III will provide +2.25D to +2.50D of Add power.
